Carson City Councilman Introduces Anti-Bullying Ordinance
Published on Thursday, 08 May 2014 05:37
Carson City Councilman Mike Gipson joined the South Bay-based suicide prevention organization, Kevin’s Cause, and a host of community supporters on Saturday to announce an anti-bullying ordinance seeking criminal prosecution for those who bully school-age children.
The announcement was made during an anti-bullying summit, “Together We Stand, Let’s Take a Hand and Stop Bullying,” hosted by Kevin’s Cause’s to stem the tide of bullying incidents that in some cases end in tragedy.
Stating that the punishment for bullying and cyberbullying is just not enough to deter those who regularly target school-age children, Gipson, joined by Mayor Jim Dear and members of the city’s Human Relations Commission, said bullying of any form must stop.
While bullying and cyberbullying are often underreported and become a significant safety problem for those who are bullied, and in some cases, those who bully, the acts have become a serious and widespread problem that generally occurs in cities and states nationwide. Federal data indicates that 28% of students in grades 6-12 are victims.
Suicide has been identified by the Center for Disease Control as the third leading cause of death in teenagers and victims of bullying and cyberbullying are statistically more likely to have suicide ideation and suicide attempts.

The Compton City Council formally recognizes Kevin's Cause Suicide Prevention and Awareness, a nonprofit launched by Compton native Wanda Jackson, second from right, earlier this year to help raise awareness about suicide within the Black community, during the Tuesday, Sept. 21, city council meeting. Jackson named the organization after her late son, who took his own life in 2008. She noted during the presentation that suicide is among the leading causes of death among African-American males. I know that no matter how much I speak about Kevin, it will never bring my son back. I know because I’ve tried. And neither will a million tears, I know because that’s how much I’ve cried. I also know that by sharing my story I can’t help Kevin, but I can help others to live.
I realize that my son had to have been in the deepest kind of pain to end his precious life. I still hurt and feel this tremendous pain tugging at the core of my soul when I think about how, in the last moments of Kevin’s life when he walked into my garage for the last time, he must have felt so all alone.

Wanda Jackson grew up in Compton. For many years she had a good life with her husband and family in a city she loves. "We were an average family,"she told The Bulletin. "We had our share of ups and downs, but overall we were happy."But everything changed on Aug. 26, 2008. That's the day Wanda found her son dead by his own hand in the garage of their home.
